Boone County Office of Emergency Management reminds people of safety protocols during extreme weather

Marie Moyer

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Office of Emergency Management is reminding residents about extreme weather safety as Mid-Missouri is forecasted to be hit with high winds, heavy rain, and risks for hail and tornadoes on Easter weekend.

In a Facebook post Friday, the BCOEM reminds drivers to avoid driving through moving and high water.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency also advises people not to walk or swim through flood waters and to stay off bridges with fast-moving water in case of flooding.

According to FEMA’s National Flood Hazard Layer Viewer, the City of Columbia has risks of flooding around many creeks and streams in the area, like Hinkson and Bear Creek.

The National Weather Service has a flood warning in effect for Hinkson Creek, Petite Saline Creek and Moreau River.

FEMA also reminds people to have an emergency shelter plan, ideally located in a windowless basement or at the lowest level of a building. The shelter should be stocked with food, water and medical supplies.

If a tornado touches down, people should seek shelter immediately. Drivers should exit their vehicles and find a place low or dug into the ground to lie in. It’s also recommended to avoid bridges and underpasses during a tornado.

Woodland Park students will get the chance to learn from homegrown astronaut Nichole Ayers

Karla Sosa

WOODLAND PARK, Colo. (KRDO)- Students from Woodland Park will get to talk with Astronaut Nichole Ayers. She’ll answer questions about science, engineering, and more, all from aboard the International Space Station. It’s been over a month since Woodland Park’s very own NASA pilot, Major Nichole Ayers, went off to space.

According to NASA, the school wants to show students that even though they live in a small town, they can achieve big goals.

Ayers said that growing up next to the Air Force Academy during the shuttle era caught her eye.

“I was like, oh, so that’s what I want to do. I want to be a pilot in the Air Force and at the Air Force Academy. Right there, the thunderbirds [are] flying every year. It was just a natural decision for me,” said Ayers.

Ayers along with three crew mates went on a mission to relieve astronauts Butch Wilmore and Suni Williams, who found themselves spending 9 months in space after an issue with their return capsule.

In a previous interview, Ayers told KRDO13 about some challenges.

“One of the most challenging parts of our training here in Askern is the neutral buoyancy lab and learning how to do a spacewalk. You know, as a F-22 pilot, we were kind of on the operational tip of the spear in the military, and now we get to go do things that are on the operational tip of the spear for humanity,” said Ayers.

Guests can also watch the 20-minute Space-to-Earth call on Monday at 9:55 a.m. on the NASA STEM YouTube Channel.

Salinas Police held a workshop Saturday to generate interest in a career in law enforcement

Jeanette Bent

SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) — The Salinas Police hosted a workshop Saturday to walk future recruits through what it takes to join the force.

Salinas Police Chief Carlos Acosta says that the challenge in is finding people who want to join the law enforcement profession is a real problem.

“Right now, we are down 13 sworn positions, including four that are frozen,” he said. “It’s hard to say what we really need but my goal is to grow the organization more than what we have now, which is about 144 sworn department members.”

Fifty-six people were RSVP’d for the workshop, and police broke down what it takes to be a part of law enforcement.

They showed potential future police how to navigate board interview, written exams, physical agility tests as well as what to expect in the police academy.

Chief Acosta says that while staffing issues continue, events like this are critical to not only attract new recruits, but also help them succeed.

He also says that the workshop is part of a larger effort to build up the department with the right people, as well as support current officers with balanced workloads, wellness resources and training.
