The School Buzz: ALLIES bridges gap between students with dyslexia and parents

Josh Helmuth

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KRDO) – Colorado Springs is home to a school that helps students specifically with dyslexia. It’s called ALLIES (Academy for Literacy, Learning and Innovation Excellence). Twice a year, they host “Dyslexia Night,” a special night to help parents better understand what their children are going through.

The D-49 school takes parents through a series of work stations, simulating the pressure, anxiety, and frustration students often suffer while dealing with dyslexia in a traditional classroom. The experience makes some parents emotional.

“My kid is in fifth grade. It’s the first time I’ve experienced this,” said one parent during last week’s Dyslexia Night. “To think that I have encouraged her and I’ve tried, but there’s just so much more that I could have done differently.”

And the school recognizes that, although dyslexia is common, it’s still very misunderstood.

“Every student that walks through our door is treated with kindness and respect, but often when they come to us, they are a little beaten down and frustrated from their school experience, so it’s our job to build them back up,” said Amy Zweifel, ALLIES’ principal.

Columbia woman pleads guilty to 2 felonies in May 2024 shooting

Jazsmin Halliburton

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia woman pleaded guilty on Wednesday to a pair of felonies in connection with a fatal May 2024 shooting.

Quanina Lakeitha Lambert, 34, pleaded guilty to second-degree assault and first-degree endangering the welfare of a child. She was previously charged with first-degree assault, second-degree felony murder and hindering a felony prosecution.

She will be sentenced on Friday, June 13.

Defense Attorney Steven Cocannon said Lambert’s guilty plea was the best decision.

“One of the benefits for her today is that a murder charge was dismissed in open court today and obviously is a a felony and has certain percentage that are high that would be have to be served and she was risking a jury trial in that,” Concannon said.

“The state through negotiations has dismissed that charge and her exposure as you saw in court today is limited to ten years everything from probation to ten years,” Concannon added.

In court Wednesday, the state said it will be recommending ten years and the defense said it will recommend probation at the sentencing hearing.

According to previous reporting, police allege Lambert was inside a home on Rice Road that was apparently targeted by a group of shooters who pulled up in an SUV. Lambert allegedly gave her gun to a man at the scene. Police found a man who was shot in the head and later died at an area hospital. He was identified as Trevon Ashcraft, 18.

Jordan Brantley, 19, was also arrested for his alleged role in the shooting. Brantley was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree felony murder and armed criminal action. He is being held at the Boone County Jail without bond.

He has a hearing set for 1:30 p.m. Monday, May 19.

Brantley is accused of being part of the group targeting the house and was seen on video wearing a black ski mask, according to a probable cause statement. He was allegedly seen on video shooting down Boyd Lane during the shootout. Police believe he fired the fatal shot.

Shannon Glasgow was also arrested, accused of driving someone accused of murder away from a shooting scene. He pleaded guilty to hindering a felony prosecution in Boone County in January. He was sentenced to 180 days and was given full credit for time served.

Another man was charged with evidence tampering and hindering prosecution.

Anthony pitches complete game in 5-3 Dons win over rival San Marcos

Mike Klan

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – Eric Anthony made his final start against rival San Marcos count with a complete game 5-3 win as Santa Barbara stayed tied for first place in the Channel League.

The senior Anthony, who recently signed to play at the University of Puget Sound, escaped several jams including the final inning.

San Marcos entered the top of the seventh inning down 5-2 and managed to push across a run and had the bases loaded but Anthony turned them away.

The Dons scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning on an RBI double by Cruz Lorca, a safety squeeze, a bad throw and a wild pitch.

San Marcos took advantage of two throwing errors in the top of the third to plate a pair of runs to jump back into the game.

But the Dons stayed in front thanks in large part to Anthony who had 6 strikeouts on the day.

The Dons are now 8-2-1 in the Channel League which ties them with Ventura with 3 games left.

Santa Barbara plays at San Marcos on Friday.

San Marcos wins outright Channel League volleyball title with comeback win over Dons

Mike Klan

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – San Marcos boys volleyball was not in the sharing mood.

After dropping a lopsided first set at Santa Barbara, the Royals won the next three sets to complete a season sweep over the Dons and claim the outright Channel League championship.

A loss to Santa Barbara would have created a 3-way tie for first place with Dos Pueblos who now ends up second and the Dons in third place. All three teams are CIF-SS playoff bound.

The Dons celebrated Senior Night beforehand and then opened with an impressive 25-15 first set victory.

Hayes Costner led the way in that opening set win.

But the Royals bounced back to take set #2 behind the strong play of sophomore Matteo Burdick.

With Luke Zuffelato booming several kills the Dons led for much of the third set including a 22-18 advantage late.

But the Royals stormed back and captured the third set 25-23 on a powerful kill by Calvin Frissel.

San Marcos held off the Dons in the fourth set 26-24 and celebrated the championship.
