QUESTION OF THE DAY: Should Columbia continue to pick up curbside recycling without recycling it?

Matthew Sanders

The recycling plant at the Columbia landfill remains offline after a tornado hit it on Easter Sunday, and it’s unclear when the facility will operate again.

Meanwhile, the city government is searching for solutions to meet the demand for the service. Last week, the City of Columbia said it would resume picking up curbside recycling. However, the material isn’t going to be recycled.

Instead, it will go into the landfill.

City leaders say they want to keep residents in the rhythm of putting out recycling and that they don’t want to make households’ trash burden too great.

Should the city continue picking up recyclables separately? Let us know by voting in the poll.

KRDO13 talked with one young man who said his parents were on a date night and decided to go to the underground night club to dance when the DEA busted down the doors.

Juan said he was getting ready for work when he got the devastating news about his parents. For privacy, we’re not revealing Juan’s last name or showing his pictures.

“A lot of people started calling me, telling me that they took my mom and dad,” said Juan.

“They came here to have fun, and for having fun, they’re paying the price. I don’t think it’s fair,” said Juan. “Like everyone, they came here to work, have a better life. It’s unfair that they also took them.”

Juan said he still hasn’t been able to get in contact with his parents.

“We just heard that they took them to Denver, from there we haven’t heard anything else. ICE opens tomorrow [Monday], so we’re going to try and talk with them unless they call us,” said Juan.

With his parents now in ICE custody, Juan is the sole caretaker of the household and is in charge of taking care of his 4 younger siblings, who range in age from 9 to 15. While also looking for ways to help his parents.

“If we can we’re going to try to get an attorney, they’re our parents they need to be with us,” said Juan.

Juan also had a message for his parents, hoping they’ll be able to see it, “Don’t worry, we’re going to do everything we can so you can be with us again.”

Plaza Theatre hosts free community presentation on restoration, reopening

Athena Jreij

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. (KESQ) — The Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation hosted a community presentation looking at the theatre’s re-opening and progress of its restoration.

The free event took place at 11 a.m. Sunday inside the Palm Springs Convention Center.

The one hour presentation walked attendees through the theatre’s history from the time it originally opened until today.

The event also showed the historical significance of the building, as well as the many events held inside it that helped put Palm Springs on the map, including several movie premieres and film festivals.

Organizers say the theatre’s rich past is a perfect reminder to showcase what the space is capable of in the future.

“The theater was built in 1936 and from the opening, it had a unique connection to Hollywood, and a lot of what happened to the theater had a lot to do with building the brand of Palm Springs,” VP of the Palm Springs Plaza Theatre Foundation, Kevin J. Corcoran said.

The theatre is scheduled to open in December with actress Lily Tomlin set to star in the inaugural show.

The cost of remodeling is expected to be nearly $3 million higher than initially predicted. The City of Palm Springs project had an original cost of $34 million.

The foundation is still working to raise additional funds for the theatre as it will need to pay back the city $10 million in construction costs.

Arson suspect arrested for violent disturbance at a Walmart in Calexico

Dillon Fuhrman

CALEXICO, Calif. (KYMA, KECY) – The Calexico Police Department (CPD) announced the arrest of an arson suspect following a violent disturbance at a Walmart store located within the city limits.

According to CPD, the incident happened before 5:00 p.m. Saturday, with the suspect, a 38-year-old man, entering the store and “attempted to ignite store merchandise using a lighter obtained from the shelves.”

CPD says the suspect, later identified as Jesse Romero, was previously removed from another business, located south of Walmart.

During the incident at the Walmart, CPD says Romero was initially confronted and stopped by an employee before officers arrived, but Romero assaulted the employee and tried to stop him from calling 911.

When officers arrived, CPD says Romero displayed “continued aggressive behavior and violently resisted arrest,” with additional units being requested as Romero fought with officers and “attempted to disarm one of them” by reaching for both their taser and firearm.

Following this, CPD says officers successfully restrained Romero and placed him under arrest.

A medical team from the Calexico Fire Department, according to CPD, responded to treat Romero, who was then subsequently taken to El Centro Regional Medical Center for medical clearance before being booked into the Imperial County Jail.

Romero is facing multiple felony charges, which includes attempted arson, burglary, felony assault and felony resisting arrest, according to CPD.

A CPD officer suffered injuries during the altercation, with CPD says the officer is currently receiving treatment and is expected to survive.

Romero is a registered arsonist with a prior conviction for setting fire to a former Burger King building in Calexico.
