Cal Poly loses first Big West game of the season

Mike Klan

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Two opponents at the top of the Big West and receiving votes in multiple national polls, the Mustangs and Rainbow Warriors went the distance in a 10-inning nailbiter that saw Cal Poly’s win streak end with the 4-2 loss.

In front of 2,818 fans at Baggett Stadium, the venue’s second-largest crowd of the season, Cal Poly (23-9, 12-1 BWC) and Hawai’i (24-8, 10-6 BWC) battled to the bitter end in game one of D1Baseball.com’s mid-major weekly spotlight series.

Tanner Sagouspe (3-2) was shackled with the loss after allowing Shunsuke Sakaino’s go-ahead home run in the top of ten.

Ryan Fenn went 3-for-5 in his second straight three-hit effort and seventh of the season, while Alejandro Garza extended his hitting streak to 15 after notching his first collegiate home run.

On the defensive end, Griffin Naess enjoyed one of his best starts on the mound, providing eight complete innings for the Mustangs while allowing just four hits and one run. Naess, the reigning Big West Freshman Pitcher of the Year, tallied seven strikeouts for the second time this season to tie his single-game career high.

All was quiet on both fronts through the first three innings. Naess was dealing and the Mustangs were having trouble finding consistency at the plate, but all that changed with Cam Hoiland’s second home run in as many games.

The solo homer went 353 feet and stayed just inside the right-field foul pole to put Cal Poly up by one in the third.

Naess did not allow a Hawai’i baserunner until a lead-off walk in the fourth inning, but the Rainbow Warriors built on the breakthrough to pull back a run on a fielder’s choice and close play at home plate.

For the most part, both side’s bats went relatively silent through the next two innings until the bottom of six when Garza clobbered his first career collegiate home run over left field. The pair of solo shots from Hoiland and Garza were the only runs Cal Poly would gather in the end.

With Tanner Sagouspe relieving Naess to start the ninth, Hawai’i later found itself working with a pair of one-out baserunners in scoring position.

A fly ball to shallow left field allowed Vachini to earn the second out, which sent the Rainbow Warrior home on a tag-up. Vachini slightly overthrew Castellon’s cut-off and Downing gathered the rolling ball to gun down a runner heading to third. Despite the final out via Downing, the Hawai’i baserunner from third made it home in time, tying the game at two.

Jack Collins was intentionally walked in the ninth with two outs and a chance to walk off the game with the go-ahead run at third, sealing extra innings after Casey Murray Jr. was struck out.

Shunsuke Sakaino hit a no-doubter for the go-ahead two-out, two-run homer at the top of ten, and Cal Poly never really found enough offense in the tenth for a comeback. Hawai’i took game one 4-2 with the win going to Isaiah Magdaleno.

The Mustangs and Rainbow Warriors play game two on Saturday with the first pitch set for 3:05 pm at Baggett Stadium.

Gauchos are a hit in series opener at Riverside

Mike Klan

RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Baseball team (22-10, 8-8) kept their bats hot on Friday night, scoring runs in each of the first five innings en route to a 13-4 win over UC Riverside (12-20, 3-13 Big West). Tyler Bremner struck out 10 Highlanders and earned the win on the mound, climbing to second on Santa Barbara’s career strikeouts list in the process. At the plate, all nine Gauchos in the lineup got a hit, with three of them tallying three, while LeTrey McCollum led the team with three RBIs.

HOW IT HAPPENEDSanta Barbara took the lead early, putting up a crooked number in the top of the first. Xavier Esquer led off with a single on the first pitch of the game, then Cole Kosciusko’s double put Gauchos on second and third with just one out. The doubles continued, with Jonathan Mendez plating two runs on one to the gap in left center, then Ian Fernandez driving one over the center fielder’s head to plate Mendez and make it 3-0.

Bremner struck out two Highlanders in the bottom of the first, allowing just a two-out single, and the Gaucho offense tacked on another run in the top of the second. Reiss Calvin led off the frame with another double and moved to third on Nolan Farley’s sacrifice bunt. Calvin then scored on Kosciusko’s infield single, a towering pop-up that dropped between the third baseman and shortstop.

Bremner got into trouble for the one and only time in the bottom of the fourth. The Highlanders scored four runs on six hits in the inning, though the Santa Barbara ace did get all three of his outs by way of the K in the frame. Even better for Bremner, the offense picked him up and re-took the lead in the top of the third. Kelly’s two-out double put a Gaucho in scoring position, and Fernandez’s two-out, two-strike single brought him home to put Santa Barbara back in front, 5-4. Bremner came back and retired the Highlanders in order in the bottom half of the inning.

In the fourth and fifth innings, the Gauchos broke the game wide open. In the top of the fourth, McCollum’s two-run home run to left center made it 7-4. In the fifth, Fernandez continued his great night with another RBI, singling to left center to plate Nate Vargas, who had led off the inning with a bunt single. Nolan Farley made it 9-4 with a sacrifice fly, then Esquer plated two more runs with a single into the right center field gap, putting Santa Barbara up, 11-4. Bremner stayed in firm command on the mound in the bottom of the fifth, striking out the side on just 11 pitches.

The righty put up another perfect inning in the bottom of the sixth, and the Gaucho offense put their finishing touches on the game in the top of the seventh. After an error and an infield single, McCollum scored Santa Barbara’s 12th run of the night with a sacrifice bunt, then Kosciusko made it 14 with a single up the middle.

Donovann Jackson took over on the bump in the bottom of the seventh and worked around a lead-off infield single, then worked around a lead-off hit batter in the eighth, with two strikeouts. Stunner Gonzalez took over for the lefty in the ninth and got the first two Highlanders he faced, including his first career strikeout. After his first career hit batter, he bounced back with his second career K to end the game.

BY THE NUMBERSAfter a second consecutive 10-strikeout performance on Friday, Bremner overtook both Shane Bieber and Rodney Boone on UC Santa Barbara’s career strikeouts list, moving into second in program history. With 241 in his career, he is 33 away from matching Dan Yokubaitis’ record.Friday was the first game this season in which the Gauchos have tallied 18 or more hits. The last time Santa Barbara had that many hits was on May 24, 2024, when they faced… UC Riverside.Gonzalez’s ninth-inning cameo was his second appearance in as many games for the Gauchos after he debuted in the ninth of Tuesday night’s win.As one of the three Gauchos with three hits on the night, Kelly set a new career high, his first three-hit outing as a collegiate baseball player. He has hits in each of his last five games now.

UP NEXTSanta Barbara will look to secure the series win on Saturday, April 12 in game two from the Riverside Sports Complex. First pitch is set for 6 p.m., with Calvin Proskey set to take the mound for the Gauchos. The game will be live on ESPN+ with live stats and an audio broadcast available through ucsbgauchos.com.

911 caller reacts to Pocatello officer-involved shooting

Linda Larsen

POCATELLO, Idaho (KIFI) – Victor Perez, the 17-year-old disabled teen shot by Pocatello Police, has been declared clinically brain dead, according to the autistic teen’s family. The Perez family has now reached the difficult decision to take Victor Perez off life support tomorrow morning in response to the diagnosis.

In the hours following the announcement, the father and son who made the 911 call leading to the incident have expressed their grief and heartfelt apology to the victim’s family.

On most days, you can find father and son Brad and Bridger Andreas working together in the auto repair shop. On Saturday, they were doing just that. They had the garage door open, enjoying a nice spring day, when they noticed a disturbance in a neighbor’s backyard behind the shop.

“It was getting out of hand, and it didn’t look like they were able to get things under control,” said Bridger Andres.

The Perez family had been enjoying an afternoon barbeque that day when Victor got a hold of a large kitchen knife. Victor has been diagnosed with autism and cerebral palsy, and according to the family, the teen was prone to behavioral outbursts.

The family says Victor had a similar outburst during their family barbecue, as the teen took a kitchen knife and threatened family members. They repeatedly tried to get the knife away from him. Because of his inability to walk, he was mostly lying on the ground.

Seeing the Perez family struggle to get the knife from Victor, Brad Andres began to call the police.

“My intent when I made that 911 call is ,’I see somebody across the street with a knife. I don’t want anybody to get hurt,” said Bridger. “I wanted police to show up, talk to the man, and de-escalate. They did the exact opposite of that.”

Within seconds of the officers’ arrival, the situation escalated to a tragic conclusion. Victor Perez was shot nine times and had to be revived on the scene.

911 caller faces online death threats

“I definitely do feel a sense of responsibility,” Bridger told Local News 8. “Here’s how I look at it. If I didn’t make the 911 call, none of this would happen.”

The public outcry against the way the police handled the scene has been intense, with some people striking back at Brad and Bridger for calling the police. Even more disturbing, Bridger has received multiple death threats via social media, accusing him of being responsible for Victor’s injuries.

“I have people from all over the country saying, I’m going to come and go do your work, and I’m going to hurt you,” said Bridger. “I’m going to come and jump you. I’m going to make you learn.”

Shared grief between neighbors

Riddled with guilt about what happened, the father and son say they wanted to talk to the family.

“Like I said, I feel the guilt of it,” said Bridger Andres. “And going over there is like, hey, yeah, I made the call that now put your son into this situation. And I’m sorry.”

It was during Local News 8’s interview with Victor’s aunt Ana Vazquez regarding the 17-year-old’s condition that Brad and Bridger approached the family fo the first time and apologized for what had happened.

In a short conversation, the father and son quietly embraced the grieving aunt and asked if she was doing okay. And when Vazquez answered in an inevitable and resounding ‘no,’ the pair supported her in her grief.

“I believed terrible things when I made that call,” Brad Andres told Vazquez. “I believed they were trained. I believe somebody talked to all those officers and told them how to deal with this. And I’m so sorry.”

According to Pocatello Police, their officers believed that Victor was intoxicated and dangerous as they approached the family’s home, partially due to the initial 911 call.

In his short talk with Vazquez, Brad Andres apologized profusely for his part.

“I know Victor was not drunk. In my life experience, I look at someone acting that way, and that’s what I thought I could have been, and I’m sorry for accusing that,” said Andres.

In response, Vazquez told the pair the call wasn’t the problem.

“The problem is that the police acted based on the call,” Vazquez told Andres. “How can you react based on the call? …I have family that works in police as a federal, as a correctional, as a state police, and all of them, as soon as they come to a place, they ask, what is this situation? And they (the Pocatello Officers) didn’t.”

“It was all there. It was all obvious,” agreed Brad Andres.

“Well, the police looked like they don’t care. They don’t care,” said Vazquez with finality.

Nothing can change what happened, but the hope is to take steps to ensure that it never happens again.

Pocatello Mayor responds to Perez health update

As word broke of Victor’s condition, Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad sent out the following statement:

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and loved ones during this unimaginably difficult time. We recognize the pain and grief this incident has caused in our community,” said Pocatello Mayor Brian Blad.

Mayor Blad has faced increased online criticism in the days following the officer-involved shooting, which left a non-verbal 17-year-old with autism and cerebral palsy, Victor Perez, in critical condition. Blad only recently addressed the incident in a recorded statement released the Thursday following the shooting.

However, Blad has confirmed that the four officers involved in the incident were immediately placed on administrative leave following the incident. He says the city will release the police body camera footage in the coming weeks.

Vigil moved up as the community grieves with Perez family

For members of the community who wish to attend, the time of the candlelight vigil supporting the Perez family has been changed.

The vigil will now be held at 9 AM, Saturday, April 12. Victor will then be taken off life support after the vigil is finished.

Ryan Shiner

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A man and a woman suffered moderate injuries in a crash on Friday on Interstate 70 in Cooper County, according to a crash report from the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

The report says that a 2021 Jeep Grand Cherokee – driven by a 63-year-old man from Holden, Missouri – was heading eastbound when the driver slowed it down because of traffic congestion. A 2006 Hummer H2 – driven by a 19-year-old man from Decatur, Alabama – did not stop and rear-ended the Jeep, the report says.

The crash was reported at 6:35 p.m. near mile marker 111. MSHP’s Troop F – which covers much of Mid-Missouri – shared on its social media at 7:11 p.m. that the roadway was blocked and backed up traffic because of a crash.

Cascades East Transit workers, supporters hold rally as union negotiates for new contract

Tyson Beauchemin

BEND, Ore. (KTVZ) — On Friday morning, a group gathered just outside the Hawthorne Transit Station in Bend to rally for workers.

Cascades East Transit is currently negotiating with the workers’ union, Local 757 of the Amalgamated Transit Union. On the table: wages, benefits and more.

Bus drivers and other employees are still working, so many of the people at the rally were not CET employees, but rather citizens showing support for bus drivers.

At the rally, Peter Loverso told KTVZ News his reasons for attending, saying, “Public transit is how people get to medical help. It’s how they get to work. It’s how they get to their family. It’s necessary for a community.

Of particular concern in this round of negotiations is retaining workers. The union wants incentives for employees to stay with CET for a longer time.

Coachella attendees brave the heat for first day of festival fun

Kendall Flynn

INDIO, Calif. (KESQ) – Coachella has a 125,000 people capacity each day, causing long lines and wait times to get into the festival grounds. Attendees travel from across the country for the music and arts, but it can be a tiring experience, especially in 100 degree heat.

Friday festival goers were faced with triple digit heat, making waiting outside difficult.

“It’s hot,” Renee Boykin said. “I’m not gonna lie. It’s real hot.”

“It’s definitely hotter than last year,” Luis Heredia said. “We came weekend two, and it was about 20 degrees less hot, so just getting used to the extra heat.”

But visitors are doing what they can to cope with the heat, and making sure it doesn’t become a more serious issue.

“It’s bearable, just get a cold towel and slap it on your neck,” Andrew Webb said. “But it’s just staying in the shade, staying out of the heat, but drink a lot of water.”

Heredia had a simple answer of how he planned to cope with the heat.

“Water. Water. Water. Water,” Heredia said.

Even though the heat can be tiring, visitors said their not going to let it stop them from enjoying their favorite artists. Friday night had popular headliners with Lady Gaga and Missy Elliott, making visitors ensure they brace all the Coachella Valley elements no matter what.

“It’s hot, but just a little Liquid I.V., a little water, a good attitude [and] you almost don’t feel it,” Zak Berman said.

Even with the Friday excitement, the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival is just getting started, and visitors have two more weekends of concerts and fun in the sun.
