UPDATE: Highway potholes in El Paso County filled after KRDO 13’s “Road Warrior” report last week

Scott Harrison

EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (KRDO) — Potholes on two local highways have been quickly patched by Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) crews, apparently the day after they were featured on a report by KRDO 13’s The Road Warrior.

“I noticed it this past Wednesday, around 6 in the afternoon,” said Sam Sprott, a viewer who alerted KRDO to a large pothole at the interchange of US 24 and Peterson Road. “I was very much surprised. Kudos to CDOT — whoever filled it. Kudos to them, because they really came out and did a good job.”

KRDO met Sprott on Tuesday at the pothole on the foot of the US 24 on-ramp, and nearly every passing driver seemed to be familiar with it and swerved around it; CDOT also filled several smaller potholes nearby.

More potholes reported by a KRDO viewer were also filled on southbound Highway 21 (Powers Boulevard), slightly north of the Fountain Boulevard intersection.

“Oh, sweet! That was fast!” said Michele McCarty, who contacted KRDO about the pothole.

Other potholes in the immediate area were not patched, however — meaning that more work in that area could be forthcoming.

Meanwhile, improvements are already planned for the US 24/Peterson intersection; Colorado Springs officials will announce details Wednesday about a project there that begins next month.

More challenging, however, is filling potholes in parking lots, on service roads or other private property.

In Tuesday’s story, KRDO also reported on a mass of large, deep potholes north of the Chelton Road/Delta Drive intersection, on a road commonly used by drivers as a shortcut to local businesses.

On some maps, the road is labeled as a continuation of Delta, but city officials recently confirmed that it is privately owned and is the responsibility of that owner to repair the potholes.

“Wow, I did not know that,” said Patti Smothers, who regularly uses the road. “I just figured it was a street, and that the city would be responsible for it. These (owners) need to get together, get some money together and get it done. But you have to get a lot of people before they’re going to do something. It’s just so bad that I thought someone would have already fixed it.”

KRDO did a parcel search on the El Paso County Assesor’s webpage and found that the property is owned by a local car wash; KRDO is trying to contact the owner.

KRDO also tried to contact the owners of property where potholes have developed and continue to worsen, both along South 8th Street: Behind the Sonic restaurant and in front of the Shell gas station.

KRDO is awaiting a response from those owners; in a 2016 report, Sonic repaired the potholes on its property after being contacted by KRDO but some of them have developed again and drivers have tried to fill it with nearby landscaping stones.

That same strategy was applied last fall by a driver, on the largest of a series of potholes on Democracy Point, in the Interquest area; after KRDO reported on the situation, the owner initially filled the potholes and later repaved the affected road segment.

A KRDO report also led to the patching of pesky potholes on an access road to and from the Walmart shopping center near the intersection of Powers and Woodmen Road; Walmart eventually repaved most of the road.

Festival goers hit the road after the first weekend of Coachella

Allie Anthony

Thousands of people drive in from all over the country for Coachella—and today, many of them are hitting the road. That means traffic is likely, especially around the festival site and on Interstate 10.

Some attendees are getting an early start this morning to try and beat the rush. For those camping at the festival, check-out is Monday morning, and everyone must clear out of the campgrounds by then.

Each Monday after the festival, the roads get packed. With more than 40,000 campers leaving, expect heavy traffic near the festival grounds and along Interstate 10.

To help avoid congestion, consider using these alternate routes:

For north-south travel: Washington Street, Jackson Street, Calhoun Street, and Golf Center Parkway

For east-west travel: Highway 111, Fred Waring Drive, Miles Avenue, Dr. Carreon Boulevard, and Avenue 54

As you head out this morning, stay alert, watch out for other drivers, and give yourself plenty of extra time to get around the valley.

Three charged in Jefferson City inmate’s death set to appear in court Monday

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Three correctional officers charged in the death of Jefferson City correctional inmate, Othel Moore, will be in a Cole County courtroom Monday at 9 a.m. in front of Judge Green for a plea/trial setting hearing.

Jacob Case and Justin Leggins are charged with third-degree accessory to assault and second-degree murder in a joint indictment in September, along with Bryanne Bradshaw, who is charged with accessory to second-degree assault and second-degree murder.

Othel Moore died in December 2023 in the Jefferson City Correctional Center from suffocation, after choking on contents from his stomach after being put in a restraint, court documents say.

Lawyers for the family had released video in October that showed Moore being carted into a dry cell wearing restraints with a mask and helmet on his head.

The Missouri Justice Coalition has previously said the JCCC Emergency Response Team excessively pepper-sprayed him before his head was covered with a hood, his body was wrapped and he was strapped to a restraint cart.

Moore entered prison in 2005 and was serving a 30-year sentence.

QUESTION OF THE DAY: Has gun violence changed the way you see Columbia?

Matthew Sanders

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

It was a violent weekend in Columbia.

Very violent.

A flurry of shots like a firefight broke out Saturday night during a party at Cosmo Park, leaving one person with critical injuries. Another person suffered serious injuries.

Two men were injured, and two minors, both male, were arrested early Sunday in a Downtown Columbia shooting. Another person was shot in the leg Friday night in south Columbia but had only minor injuries.

That wasn’t the area’s only gun violence, as a shooting also happened Sunday in Callaway County that left one person dead and another with critical injuries.

But it’s Columbia where gun violence makes frequent headlines and where residents have regularly expressed their dissatisfaction with violent crime levels. Are these just a city’s growing pains, or is Columbia’s nature radically changing?

2025 Arizona Pride Tour stops in Yuma

Dillon Fuhrman

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – A burst of color and community filled the Historic Yuma Theatre Sunday night as the 2025 Arizona Pride Tour returned to Yuma.

The show started at 7:00 p.m., and featured two local performers, Inky Oshanns and Poison Ivy Oshanns, along with performers from all across the southwest U.S.

For its third year in a row, it drew a packed crowd and an even bigger message.

The show is part of an annual tour which brings the “art of drag” to rural communities across Arizona.

This year’s event in Yuma sold over 230 tickets, prompting organizers to move into a larger venue.

“I didn’t realize how many younger people become homeless or suicidal because their parents disown them for being who they are. And since I retired, I started learning that, helping Miss Nature and everything, it’s a beautiful thing,” said Terri Hall, Miss Nature’s father.

Last year, KYMA spoke to the executive director of Miss Nature LLC, who said the tour would branch out of Arizona, stopping in Blythe, California, with additional plans to venture out to New Mexico and other states.

Organizers says they’ll be back again next year, bigger and better than ever.

Two dead, two injured in head-on crash in Yuma

Dillon Fuhrman

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – The Yuma Police Department (YPD) is investigating a head-on crash where two people died and two people were injured.

In a press release, the crash happened at around 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of E. 32nd Street and Avenue 6E.

YPD says a 32-year-old woman was driving a 2016 Ford Explorer westbound on 32nd Street, where it was “attempting to turn left onto Avenue 6E” when it crashed into a 2015 Nissan Rogue, driven by a 71-year-old man, heading eastbound on 32nd Street.

As a result of the crash, YPD says the woman and her passenger, a 18-month-old boy, were both taken to Onvida Health for minor injuries while the man and his passenger, a 69-year-old woman, were also taken to Onvida Health where they later died.

While alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, the investigation is ongoing, and YPD is asking witnesses or anyone who has video of the crash to call them at (928) 783-4421 or 78-CRIME at (928) 782-7463 to remain anonymous.

Home deemed “complete loss” in Corral de Tierra fire

Maxwell Glenn

CORRAL DE TIERAA, Calif. (KION) — Two people are displaced after their home burned last night in Corral de Tierra.

The fire broke out last night around 8 p.m. near Calle Viejo and Vista del Toro. While the building was unoccupied, crews managed to save animals from the home with the two residents being away from the home.

As the crews worked to contain the fire, neighbors were worried about the flames quickly spreading to their homes.

“Fire danger in California is clearly a huge concern, and I live up the hill,” said neighbor Mark Cohan. “Once I realized everything was under control, my biggest concern was being above the fire, like, what? What could be coming my way?”

Luckily, multiple agencies came to the aid of Monterey Fire to fight the fire with the home being rendered a complete loss.

“We did have great response from some of our outlying agencies. Monterey City Fire did send an engine. CAL FIRE sent two engines. Presidio of Monterey sent a water tender, and seaside fire also sent an engine,” Monterey Regional Fire Chief Matthew Lumudue said.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

MoDOT finishes removal of exit ramp in Columbia ahead of schedule

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Missouri Department of Transportation finished removing an exit ramp ahead of schedule, opening all lanes of Interstate 70 in Columbia sooner than anticipated.

The ramp removal is part of the ongoing “Improve I-70” project aimed at redesigning one of mid-Missouri’s busiest interchanges. The department had warned that the demolition of the exit ramp from westbound Interstate 70 to Business Loop 70 would cause traffic delays for drivers all weekend.

MoDOT had planned to reopen the closed portion on Monday at 6 a.m.
